Reader Question: What Watch and Strap Combo to Wear to an Interview?

“Hi Sam,

What are your thoughts on the best type of watch and strap to wear to an upcoming job interview?”

At a glance:

I will assume that the job in question is a corporate position, as what you want may depend on the level of dress required in your industry. With that being said, the easiest option for most people is to wear a dress watch.

What constitutes a ‘dress’ watch?

A dress watch is a timepiece with a refined and elegant look to it. The dial is usually clean in appearance and devoid of additional bells and whistles. I would recommend you wear an analogue watch as opposed to a digital one.

You could also wear a nice looking chronograph.

Which strap type is best?

If you are keeping it formal, your best bet is to wear the watch on a metal bracelet or perhaps a leather strap.

If the interview is not ultra formal, there is no reason why you could not wear something like a NATO strap for a bit of colour. However, if you want to play it safe you should stick to leather strap or metal bracelet.

Should I wear bracelets with it?

No, leave those for casual wear.

I do not have a dress watch, what should I buy?

Check out my article on alternatives to Daniel Wellington watches for five budget options that achieve the minimalist look.

Alternatively, if you would like a cheap and reliable automatic you should buy one of the Seiko 5 range.

That’s all for today!

Thanks for reading. Until next time!
