What I like, at a glance.
I saw a really cool idea over on the perfume blog Undina’s Looking Glass, which was a ‘perfume portrait‘, showcasing a snapshot of what she likes and dislikes.
This got me thinking that it’d be cool to do this from a style perspective, and have a style portrait.
A little bit about what gets me going sartorially.
People who inspire me,
And the things that grind my gears.
So here goes.
Styles and clothing I love:
Spring/Summer:
- My Corneliani linen jacket
- Knitted ties
- Button down collars
- Ivy trad styles
- Pleated trousers
- Baseball caps
- Linen summer trousers
- Camp collar shirts
- Magnum P.I. style
- Breton stripe tees
- Preppy style in general
- Safari jackets
- Loafers

Autumn/Winter:
- Rugby tops
- Harris Tweed
- Cricket sweaters
- Sport coats and denim
- Double breasted suits and jackets
- Flat caps
- Turtleneck sweaters
- Barbour jackets
- Striped shirts
- Bandanas worn on the neck
- Boots
Styles I want to explore in future:
- Shawl neck cardigans
- Corduroy suit
- Chalk striped suits
- Tuxedo
- Classic Americana and workwear
- Hats (other than caps)
- Cowboy boots

Things that don’t work on me, but I like on others:
- Traditional Harrington jackets
- Scarves (for the most part)
- Wearing shorts!
- Garments in light shades of grey
Who inspires me?
Old magazines. Ralph Lauren. The Duke of Windsor.
Pattern. Colour. The sky and the earth.
Steve McQueen.
Stars from Hollywood’s golden age.
And sometimes, maybe more often than I’d care to admit;
My friends on Instagram.
What I dislike:
- Three piece suits worn tieless
- Skinny fly-away collars
- Bad fits (especially too tight)
- The word ‘dapper’… more on that later.
- Short tailored jackets
- Cargo shorts
- Fused jackets
And most importantly, I find poor quality clothing and fast fashion offensive. It’s a waste of natural resources and harms the environment for nothing more than $5 tee shirts that get thrown out after two washes.
Quality is more sustainable than wonton manufacturing.
